"Structure-Function relationships in long non-coding RNAs"

Abstract:

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a recently-defined category of transcripts longer than 200 nucleotides and not translated into proteins. However, the term lncRNA is typically reserved for large eukaryotic transcripts that regulate gene expression at either the transcriptional or translational level. The current definition of lncRNAs is thus loose and combines many different types of non-coding RNAs. Necessarily, transcripts belonging to such a heterogeneous class also possess very diverse properties at the molecular and structural levels. My research focuses on understanding how specific lncRNA structures determine their cellular functions at the molecular level.

During her talk, Isabel Chillón will give you an overview of my research career on the characterization of specific structure-function relationships that she has determined for three human model lncRNAs: HOTAIR, lincRNA-p21, and MEG3, which participate in embryonal development and the regulation of the p53 stress response pathway. She will also introduce us to her current research on understanding how the mouse Meg3 lncRNA regulates the stress response and the factors that may mediate this novel function.
