Titre : Organogenetic gene-network evolution by co-option and divergence
Résumé :
Decades of research on developmental biology have described the gene networks controlling the formation of organs, but we still do not know how such complex networks evolved. I will present two Drosophila melanogaster models we are using to analyse how organogenetic gene networks evolve by divergence and by co-option.
To study gene network divergence, we analyse comparatively the gene networks controlling the formation of the main insect endocrine organs, the tracheal respiratory organs and the cephalic endoskeleton. We have evidence supporting that all three organs evolved from the same metameric homology group. Comparing the similarities and the differences of the gene networks controlling the formation of these extremely divergent organs offers an opportunity to infer how changes in an ancient gene network affect organogenesis giving rise to the evolution of extremely different functional and morphological organs.
To analyse the effects of gene network co-option we are studying a case where part of the gene network that controls the formation of the embryonic external respiratory organs has been recruited to the Drosophila adult testis. I will discuss how the shared use of a gene network leads to the interlocking of both gene networks.
