F. Ruggiero is hosting Tom Van Agtmael – come and meet him!
Tom Van Agtmael, professor at the University of Glasgow, is currently visiting the IGFL until July 25, thanks to funding from UCBL and ENS de Lyon as part of the Graduate+ MuSKLe program. A specialist in mouse models, he is hosted by Florence Ruggiero’s team to gain experience with the zebrafish model.
Biosketch:
After studying Biochemistry at the University of Antwerp (Belgium), Tom Van Agtmael earned his PhD in Molecular Genetics at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in Melbourne (Australia). He then moved to the MRC Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh for his postdoctoral training as an EU Marie Curie Fellow. During this time, he identified the first vertebrate Col4a1 mutations and highlighted the role of type IV collagen in eye and kidney disease.
Following a Wellcome Trust Fellowship at the University of Edinburgh, he was awarded an MRC New Investigator Research Grant to explore the role of collagen IV in vascular biology. He later joined the University of Glasgow as an RCUK Fellow in Human Molecular Genetics, where he established his own research group at the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences. His work focuses on understanding how mutations in collagen proteins cause disease, with the goal of developing effective treatments by combining approaches ranging from molecular studies to patient-level research.
